Dr Asma leads WHO’s efforts in ensuring data is used to measure progress towards global strategic targets and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Grounded in the SDGs, WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW13) focuses on driving impact in countries based on three Triple Billion targets by 2023: one billion more people benefitting from universal health coverage, one billion more people better protected from health emergencies, and one billion more people enjoying better health and well-being.
With more than 25 years’ experience building teams and partnerships, Dr Asma has a strong track record of leading public health programmes and policies to catalyze long-term impact. Before her current role as Assistant Director-General of the Division of Data, Analytics and Delivery for Impact Dr Asma served as Director of Health Management and Metrics where she contributed to developing WHO’s GPW13 strategy including the GPW13 Results Framework and WHO Impact Measurement methods. Dr Asma is currently leading efforts to develop and launch the WHO World Health Data Platform and co-leads the Data and Digital Health Accelerator for the SDG Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All.
Dr Asma has contributed to more than 100 publications, books and policy papers on epidemiology, health surveillance and data-driven public health policy and is internationally recognized as a scientific and policy expert on global tobacco control.
